Enduring Power of AttorneyAre you aware that an estimated 5% of Irish people over the age of 65 are suffering from some form of senile dementia or Alzheimer’s? Brain injury can also affect the mental capacity of people of all ages and is the foremost cause of disability in young people. This injury can result from a road traffic accident, a fall, an assault, a sporting injury as well as an illness such as a stroke, a brain tumour, an haemorrhage, a viral infection, or a lack of oxygen to the brain as a result of a heart attack. You can put in place a simple document which will authorise a person or persons close to you, to make personal decisions as to your upkeep and welfare, and manage your assets including business and investment, as you would wish in the event of your becoming incapable of doing so yourself. This document is called an Enduring Power of Attorney (EPA). The alternative is being made a Ward of Court by way of application to the High Court which is less efficient, more costly and more distressing for your loved ones.
